Houses
The traditional house of the Choctaw was known as the chukka. The main body of the house is made of clay that has been mixed with straw and grass. The roof is a cone made out of thatched wood or straw. Around the inside wall of the building, there are seats above two feet above the floor of the room. These seats can also be used as beds. Underneath these seats/beds, people planted their crops. Corn was kept in a separate building so that it could grow tall. Families usually kept their fireplaces in the middle of the house. Chukkas were generally very small. Many members of a Choctaw community would gather to build houses for other families. Sometimes, the process of building a chukka would sometimes take as little as one day.
